2008 saw Dess as the new location for the KVVVC Rally, and provided a fine Deeside venue for the event with lots of activities for those attending - and as the crow flies it is just over the hill from Kildrummy itself. The district of Dess is 25 miles inland from Aberdeen and 4 miles east of Aboyne. To view a larger map, click here.
Set in picturesque countryside The Deeside Activity Park offers a fine lawn for the interesting vehicle display and lots of activities and attractions to add to the interest for passengers and family of the old car enthusiast.
There is ample parking for spectators and competitor's trailers, and the venue has a small restaurant for all-day food and beverages. The full range of extra-event activities and facilities is viewable at www.deesideactivitypark.com.
The long abandoned Deeside railway had a local station at Dess. The line was regular transport in days gone by for the Royal entourage on its way to Balmoral, and the remains of the track-bed are visible at the front door of the Deeside Activity Park, our venue for this year’s event. With the resurgent interest in the railway at Crathes just east of Banchory where the line is being re-instated by volunteer enthusiasts perhaps someday the train may again stop for passengers at Dess.
Four miles west of Dess is the village of Aboyne, now a leafy dormitory for busy Aberdeen. Old car enthusiasts who carry their golf clubs are well catered for nearby at Aboyne and Banchory, and, if your feet are less firmly planted than the golfer, you can choose to glide above the Dee Valley just outside Aboyne at the Airstrip which has an excellent park and view area.
Lumphanan village also lies nearby, and legend has it that it is here that Macbeth (of Shakespeare fame) met his end!
